Points for Debate  

Abstract due date: 5 February 2016 
A Points for Debate session is an opportunity for delegates to engage in a robust discussion about an issue or challenge that the proposer has identified as worthy of further exploration. The issue or challenge does not need to be based around any particular research; it may come from observation or the lived experience. The discussion may lead to the identification of ways to expose the issue or challenge to a wider audience with a view to addressing the issue or challenge through new collaborations and/or research.

Submissions for Points for Debate can be on any aspect of the conference theme or sub-themes. The number of Points for Debate sessions will be limited. There may a further opportunity during the conference to convene discussion groups around an issue or special interest.

An abstract (maximum 400 words) must be submitted for review. The abstract should be submitted as a word document using the Abstract for Review Template and NOT contain any information that might identify the author/s. The abstract should include the title and describe

1. The point for debate
2. Context/background and why the point needs to be debated
3. Relevance to the conference theme

Abstracts for Points for Debate will be reviewed against the following criteria.

  • Relevance
  • Potential to engage delegates in a rigorous discussion
  • Potential to advance our understanding of tertiary education
  • Clarity and standard of writing

Please note that presentations accepted in this category are NOT considered refereed papers. Accepted abstracts will be published on the conference website.

How to submit your final abstract accepted for presentation
If your abstract is accepted for presentation, you need to resubmit the abstract after editing for reviewer comments and adding any identifying information that was excluded from the version submitted for review including author name/s and institutional affiliation. The resubmitted abstract should follow the HERDSA Formatting Guidelines and the Points for Debate Template.   

Where revisions and/or corrections to formatting are required, authors will need to complete these within the time allocated and in compliance with the guidelines or they will not be accepted.
